Overview
There are a number of sources of support for families who may be struggling financially as a direct result of their child’s healthcare needs.
Young Patients Family Fund
YPFF was introduced by the Scottish Government in 2021 to support families when their child is an inpatient. If you’re the parent, primary carer or sibling (aged under 18) of a young inpatient under the age of 18 receiving hospital care, you can claim for the costs of travel and food.
An inpatient is a patient who lives in hospital while having treatment. You cannot claim costs for outpatient visits through the scheme.
You must normally live in Scotland. You need to make the claim from the Young Patients Family Fund within 3 months of the young inpatient being discharged from hospital.

YPFF replaced what was previously known as the Neonatal Expenses Fund. YPFF is only applicable for inpatients however there are other sources of support available for outpatients (i.e. children visiting hospital but not staying overnight).
Support With Travel Costs
If you receive Universal Credit or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, you may be entitled to help with hospital travel costs. If you are named on an HC2 or HC3 certificate or complete an HC5 form, you may also be entitled to help with travel costs. You must bring details of your benefits and appointment card when you attend the hospital. Please keep any tickets and receipts as proof of your travel costs. Please note that reimbursement will only be at the cheapest public transport rate.
Reimbursement and queries are dealt with by the General Office for NHS Grampian, which is located in the Purple Zone of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. You can contact the General Office by email or by calling 01224 552237 or 01224 554150.
Those receiving the above named benefits and travelling with children under 16 are entitled to claim expenses for one escort. If on medical grounds, your child needs two escorts you will receive reimbursement for both.
If you are not receiving these benefits and require help to pay your travelling expenses, please request and complete and return form HC1 return (you will be given a pre-paid envelope with the form).
HELP (the Health Equity + Learning Project)
Are you a family, or do you know a family, living in Grampian who struggles to get to health appointments at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital in Aberdeen for your child/children/a child you/they look after?
If you/they need financial support to travel to the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital (at the Foresterhill Health Campus), please contact welfare.rights@aberdeenshire.gov.uk or call 01467 538555.
HELP is funded by the Scottish Government and partners Aberdeenshire Council with NHS Grampian. The HELP lived experience group has identified barriers to families attending healthcare appointments for their children and has come up with some solutions to help. This project is running from November 2035 until February 2026.
