Paediatric (General) Surgery & Urology

What We Do

We look after children with general paediatric surgical and urological conditions in the north east of Scotland. We care for patients from birth until transition to adult services, usually around the age of 16 years. We also offer antenatal counselling to the families of babies who have been identified as having a potential surgical problem whilst they are still in the womb.

We offer an elective and emergency surgical service dealing with a range of paediatric surgical conditions. We are also members of the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital trauma team.

Common elective surgical complaints that we see and treat include:

  • General surgery of childhood conditions (including foreskin concerns, undescended testes, hernias and hydroceles, umbilical hernias, lumps and bumps!)
  • Urological conditions (including hypospadias, vesicoureteric reflux, pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction, bladder dysfunction)
  • Gastrointestinal conditions (gastro-oesophageal reflux, bowel dysfunction)
  • Congenital anomalies (including oesophageal atresia, congential diaphragmatic hernia, anorectal malformations, congenital lung lesions)
  • Chest wall deformities (pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum)

We provide outreach services to Elgin, Fraserburgh and Orkney (outpatient clinics) as well as Inverness and Shetland (outpatient clinics and operating lists).

Meet The Team

Coming to a Clinic

Most paediatric surgical clinics are based at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital (RACH), in the out-patient department on the ground floor, however we are sometimes able to offer appointments a bit closer to home for those families who live further away. We offer face to face, video and telephone consultations, tailored to suit each family and their child’s condition. If you have a clinic appointment, please check your letter carefully to see what sort of appointment you have along with where it is taking place. As well as seeing patients in our general paediatric surgery and paediatric urology clinics, we provide surgical input for several specialist clinics that operate at RACH:

Spina-bifida multidisciplinary clinic

Thoracic multidisciplinary clinic (alongside paediatric respiratory team)

Vascular anomaly multidisciplinary clinic (alongside dermatology, plastic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, radiology, medical paediatric and paediatric oncological colleagues)

Tongue tie clinic (alongside our local Infant Feeding Team (IFT) and Speech and Language Therapists)

Differences in sexual differentiation (DSD) clinic

Training

We are a teaching hospital and are fully committed to training the doctors of the future. Surgical and general practice trainees rotate through the department, and you may come across them during your patient journey. We also enjoy strong links with Aberdeen University and regularly host undergraduate medical students in our department
