Paediatric Psychology

Department of Paediatric Psychology

We are a team of psychologists trained in helping children and families who are experiencing difficulties because of a medical condition or injury.

We work with children and young people who:

  • Have a physical health condition
  • And are experiencing psychological or behavioural issues related to their physical health condition
  • And the difficulties impact significantly on their day-to-day life.

What We Do

It can be normal to go through a range of different thoughts and feelings about your medical condition or about coming to hospital. We help children, young people and their families to:

  • Explore ways of coping with different symptoms, emotions, thoughts and behaviour
  • Improve their overall well-being
  • Understand their condition and treatments

We also work closely with medical teams, schools and other professionals, and we meet regularly with different teams in the hospital.

Coming to see us

Any professional involved in you/your child’s care can make a referral to our team. We will contact you to arrange an appointment.

Our first appointment is a chance to get to know you, and to think about what might be most helpful. After this we’ll agree what we’re going to work on and how we will work together. This plan will be different for each family.

We’re based on the Lower Ground Floor of Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital. We can meet with families in our department, or in other areas of the hospital (for example on the ward), or online using “Near Me”.
