Medical Ward

Overview

Medical Ward at RACH is a 20-bed unit consisting of standard cubicles and infection cubicles. It is located on Level 2 of RACH and is a secure area, operated via a buzzer system. All accommodation is single occupancy with facilities in each room for parents/carers, so you can be with your child at all times (including overnight). Each cubicle has a TV available for free use between 7am and 7pm every day. RACH also benefits from free WI-FI through the “Aberdeen City Connect” service.

The ward caters for children from birth to 16 years, treating and managing a large variety of  medical conditions.

Infection Cubicles

If your child is admitted into an infection cubicle, they must remain inside the room as their condition will be infectious. This is for the safety of your child and other patients, to prevent the spread of infection. Each infectious cubicle has an “ante” room. All staff, parents and visitors must enter and leave through this ante-room and thoroughly wash hands before then entering the cubicle main door. This helps to contain the infection.

Patients in infectious cubicles are unfortunately not able to access the activity area however our Play Team are more than happy to provide toys/games to play with inside the cubicle.

Meal Times

Breakfast is at 8am, when we offer tea/coffee and toast to parents/carers present with young patients. Please note this is only offered at breakfast. For lunch and dinner, meal vouchers are required (these can be purchased from the Pink Zone cafe in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, which is open Monday to Friday until 3pm and Saturday/Sunday until 2pm).

Lunch is served from the meal cart at 12 noon and dinner at 5pm.

We support breastfeeding on Medical Ward. Breast pumps and equipment and a “milk fridge” are also available for breastfeeding mums wishing to express for their child.

Activity Area & Play

Medical and Surgical Wards share an activity area, which sits between the two ward areas. The activity area has a selection of games and toys for all ages including games consoles and hand held equipment. Your will often find the Play Team within the activity area – they are very friendly, helpful and they love to Play!

We also have a “Teenage Pit” for children of High School age so have their own space for “me time”.

Visiting

Visiting is flexible to meet the needs of each individual child. We ask that visitors respect patients and families whilst visiting and that they are mindful of mealtimes and bed times.
